Tank is planted but otherwise not inhabited, meaning no fish. Heavily planted with dwarf HC and crypts. Any remedies that can be a little more extreme since there aren't fish in there or am I stuck with using recommended doses of algae fix :)? Thanks for any advice.

Black tufts of algae? Nothing will really eat that. SAE will but they get lazy after a while. Spot treating with excel works to kill it. It will turn pink then drop off after a few weeks. To make sure it doesn't come back you will have to look into your lighting schedule, ferts and water change schedule. I think lights on too long will cause it. I'm sure someone will come along and confirm or deny soon.

You can spot treat 3ml per 10 gallons of 3% H2O2. Turn off your light and filter for 20 minutes while treating.
