I am thinking of making a DIY light to hang over my tank made up of blue LEDs to simulate moonlight. I would be using my regular T5HO on its normal schedule. The blue LED would simply be a 'for effect' night light to be used when we're around the tank at night, not for regular use.

Is there any issues with using a blue light in a planted tank that anyone knows of? Does it encourage algae growth etc etc?

No, especially not at the amount of light needed for the moonlight effect. If you were going crazy with some super powerful LED's, you *might* run in to issues with algae, but since they're just barely going to put any light in there at all, you won't see any issues.

Agreed. I also retrofitted LEDs into a t5ho fixture for exactly the same thing you are going for. It looked great at night.
