Can 10 gallon FW aquariums be sucessful planted tanks.......
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I currently have a 20 gallon high FW community tank. The tank is filled with natural colored pebble substrate and plastic plants. It is stocked with the following fish: 6 Harlequin Rasboras 6 Black Neon Tetras 1 Orange thicked-lipped Gourami 3 Bronze Corydoras My tank has been up for 1 year and I am very happy with it. The problem is that I would like to purchase a 10 gallon tank. I wish I could buy something bigger but my space is limited. So, to make a long story short, I have room for a 10 gallon tank but have no idea what to do with it. I would appreciate any suggestions or comments. The only requirement is that I would like to try my hand with a planted tank. I have no experience with aquatic plants but I know a low light tank would be best. Thanks! |

Low light, make sure you get a fluorescent fixture with it, I think that will give you 15 watts or 1.5 watts per gallon which with a 10 gallon tank is still low light. As for plants, if you have fish in the tank, they will provide the fertilizer. Low light plants include java fern, anacharis, elodea, some crypt species, and other plants that hopefully other will post.
For some other low light plants, click HERE. Best of luck and hopefully you will be successful enough to want to go to medium or high light and really see some growth. |

If the 10g hood comes with 2 screw in incandescent bulbs, you can replace them with 2 10w compact fluorescent screw ins that would give you 2wpg and would be low light.
Anubias are also low light plants. The screw in hood would be a better option IMO, because if you decide to go with higher lighting in the future, when you have more experience, you can just buy 2 20w CF bulbs and add some DIY CO2.
