Do carpeting plants need dirt or will they grow in sand? I'm upgrading my aquarium but it's not going to be in until next Tuesday so I have until then to figure out what kind d of scape I want to do.

All plants will grow in any substrate that you can physically plant them into (minus java ferns / anubiuas etc. that need not planted).

Most carpeting plants prefer lots of CO2 and stronger lighting, although some people have had success with less powerful lights and no CO2.

Is is possible to have a moss as a carpet? I let it grow wild I my smaller empty aquarium and it attached itself to the gravel and grew up.
Do you think it would work on a bigger scale?

Yes it can be done.

Use stainless steel mash or plastic mesh and secure it to substrate. place moss underneath and let grow up / through to form carpet.

You can also use tiny plants like crypt parva planted manually into a carpet. Although you will need to buy loads and loads of them. End result would be a nice carpet style plant grouping.
