Converting 55 to planted

I'm getting this strip light for my 55:

I hear that people use egg crate as a hood to their tank, does this work well?

Do I need pressurized co2? I only have 2.3 wpg so would DIY work fine? I dont want to spend another $300-400 on the pressurized thing.

Would 3 7kg bags of onyx sand be enough substrate?

im looking for a similar setup...i think you're going to be looking at more like 5 or 6 bags of substrate dude...7kg is only like 15 lbs...but i guess it all depends on how deep you want it...i think there is a calculator on this site to figure out how much substrate u need.
