Current in the planted tank

Are there any preferences in regards to direction or type of current patterns for the planted tank? When or why would you change the current? I'm asking about after you have everything fine tuned. :D
 
you might need some current to make sure you ferts are getting to all parts of the tank, and there are not stagnant pockets. i have a PH on each end of my 75 gallon (1 is used to diffuse my CO2)
 
I think it would be cool to have 4 power heads on a big tank, like a 265, and have them hooked into a wave maker device. That way all the really tall plants would sway back and forth lol
