Do Discus need live plants?

The friendliest place on the web for anyone with an interest in aquariums or fish keeping!
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Mine have a few nibbles now and then but that's about it.
I wouldn't worry about it if you don't want plants
 
Discus are often bred and kept in bare tanks with nearly daily water changes. The bare tanks let breeders keep everything very clean. This is because of the large amounts of food (beefheart) that are fed to them.

That said, IME, (nearly) all fish have to have live plants in order to thrive. Discus especially. When already doing a high tech planted tank, with weekly 50% water changes. Then discus are relatively easy to add. Thier needs fit in well with the needs of a high end planted tank. However, if one is not familiar with how to grow plants under water successfully, then somthing like a Discus may not survive the learning curve. HTH ;-)
