Not sure if this helps but I do 50% water changes on my planted tank. My African cichlid tank gets weekly 25% water changes with a 50% once a month OR is conditions call for larger.

I change 50% because I like doing things to my tank and since I don't have unlimited funds for plants or equipment and don't have unlimited space for more stocking I do water changes haha. With my plants and stock I could probably do much less water changes but my fish seem to enjoy the fresh water and they have been doing very well so why change it I guess.

I have a 220g and I actually change 50% of the water weekly. I also use an Aqueon Water Changer that does the work so it's not bad. It just takes time.
