i have the appropriate lighting for it and the proper fertilizer but the top of my substrate is mostly covered by smooth round stones around half an inch in size. i dont know if the baby tears can spread with stones of that size, if anyone knows, can they tell me? should i take the stones out or leave em in and the baby tears will grow around them?

I have dwarf baby tears in both of my tanks and from what I have seen the roots don't go terribly deep, maybe 3/4" at most but more like 1/2". So depending on how deep those stones are they might not get a very good grip. I doubt this would stop them from spreading though.

So to answer your question, I think they'll grow and spread, but they might not be very securely attached to your substrate. Of course, I'm not an expert by any stretch so please don't rely only on my response.
