Lfs has a zoo med 501 and a Ehiem eco easy 60 on clearance was wondering if one of them would be worth picking up i am a newb when it comes to external filters.Would i also need a power head to circulate CO2 with either of these will be using a diy generator

I really like Eheim canisters, and this model would be more than enough filtration for a 20 gallon tank. If it is a good deal, I'd bite on it. It would provide more than enough flow so that you wouldn't need a power head to circulate CO2.

They have two of the ehiems you think it would be enough for a 38g if i ever decide to plant it agian with a diy system

Yeah, You might be ok with just 1 of them. 2 of them would be more than enough... but you can never have too much filtration :)
