Well my tanks are jungles usually. I just leave swimming space at the front.

Yes... fully planted is best! Collectoritist style 
well at first at least, then you get to learn the various growth patterns of different plant species. Then when you do a rescape, you know how to plan for a proper aquascape. Just my 2 cents.

Tank Planting
Hello Dill...
A heavily planted tank looks good and is healthy for the fish, because the plants filter the tank water and the algae that forms on the plant leaves is a good supplement to the fishes' diet.
I would say the more plants in the tank, the better.
