I started out with plain gravel and had Amazon swords and then started adding root tabs and LeafZone. Plain gravel can work, but it's hard to keep nutrients around the roots with gravel.
I've been more successful with my sand tanks. I use DIY root tabs LeafZone , and flourish comprehensive. The LeafZone and Flourish Comp cover the micros and macros.
Swords and Crypts or heavy root feeders and need root tabs.
