How can I be sure about my fish?

As I count my fish to check on them, I regularly find "missing" fish. Normally, thsy reappear a wesk later so I assume they're hiding in that thicket of bacopa I have in the rear half of the tank. Occasionally, I have one that never reappears, and I just found one sucked to the intake of my HOB filter. Aside from just so happening to vaccum one up with my water change, how can I be sure I don't hve a dead fish buried in my bacopa I'm not seeing?

The only real way to know is a hands on approach. Get them elbows wet !!

I was thinking that... I have lost track of whom all I have as I haven't been able to complete a head count in awhile as I keep seeing fish running in and out of the thicket as I count. Best I have been able to do yet is to "just happen to suck one up" as I change water. I'm always digging in the plants and sand though.
