how do you split a java fern?

I am probably mistaken but I believe the plant grows daughter plants with roots on the leaves...you can wait until the fall off and replant them. You might be able to cut the plant at the roots and plant them but that is not what I have don with my Java Fern.
 
Oh yeah I was gonna ask about that too! There's like stringy roots growing out of the middle of one of my leaves.

And I believe they're called rhizomes not roots. Not sure of the difference though
 
The rhizome is the twiglike part that the leaves connect to. The rhizome has small roots on it. Baby plants grow on the leaves and will eventually fall off or can be pulled off and planted.
 
Ahh. It all looks like a big bunch of roots to me.
And mines not quite there yet so I'm gonna cut it
