Oh sweet, mesh would work out swell! Has there ever been any trouble with with melting or anything? I'll take a swing by the local hardware store to scope out the selection C: The tank will have a glass top, so I think it will be easy to lay some mesh over it!
I've come across some florescent fixtures that would add up to about 60 Watts for two 36" t8 bulbs, or so I think.. Would that reduction in wattage (60 W compared to 78 W) be enough to keep algae at bay without co2?
