How much sunglight is enough?

We don't want to spend too much on artificial lighting. So is there a way to measure how much light is enough? Right now it is about 15 ft away from the window, but my Dad insists there's enough light...

Sunlight will produce massive amounts of algae.

0 is to much in my opinion lol ? the less the better no good things that I know of from sun in or on an aquarium!
