How to use organic mix potting substrate

I'm trying to setup a planted tank but before I try the organic potting mix and I end up with a disaster the water turn black and all the light stuff in the substrate float to the top of the tank did anyone have an advice on how to do it or easier process as I'm a beginner for a planted tank but not the hobby!!!!
