If its going local I don't think 5 dollars is out of the question considering you said it'd be $10 at a LFS.

I think it looks better when the leaves are not as thin and leggy... So I would vote yes.

Very cool I have a couple pieces of driftwood in the corners of my tank held up by suction cups I might try to place it under but if it looks no better 5$ is the price

There are several species that are labeled as elodea or anacharis. Like was said, it grows a little different under different conditions, or could be a different species all together.
