Lessons learned.... Beware-bandwidth, lots of pics.. 9/16/06

Well, I learned a big lesson tonight. Know what you are buying. Especially if it's off aquabid, lol. I got the plants I ordered, and was a it disappointed. In fact, I got some plants that I think are terrestrial. They are called gold something, not sure the name but they have them here at Petco. They look like a tall grass and they are half green and half gold. There were also the ones that were solid green. I'm pretty sure those were terrestrial. I'll post some pics of the plants I got. When I spread them out on a towel, I took pics of most of them.

Also, as part of the lessons learned, don't get more than you need, lol. What I didn't realize for the package, it was enough for like a 125G, lol. That is if all the plants were truely aquatic. And so many swords, lol. By the time I was done deciding and planting, most of what was left was pretty much dried up. Same with the plants I pulled out of the 29G, all dried up. I was just so upset, lol, I tossed everything. But because of having so much algae problems, didn't want to pass it on to someone else, especially when I have no idea how to stop it. I upped my dosing, upped my CO2, dropped my phosphate dosing, and a few other things. I tried EI for a couple weeks, still grew fast. And would grow more at night than during the day. If it wasn't for that, would have set up a couple packages to send out. So, I'm bummed, lol. But it's a lesson learned.

What are some of your recent lessons learned?

Edit:

Here's some of the plants, help me name them.....

Plant 12 is definitely Cabomba. I know I've seen some of the others, but this one I know for sure.

25- parrot's feather(the floating stuff from ponds and such) once you plant it it will rot, but it will send out chutes and grow new plants that are truly aquatic.

This was like taking a test, I felt pretty good that almost all looked familiar, and I could readily identify about half. I will use the easy button and repost Malkores list with comments:

1. looks like Acorus - non-aquatic (Agreed-Zez)
2. could be a melon sword? (Maybe a Red Ruben that was not under high light-Zez)
3. a crypt, possible Affinis (if the stems are pink, maybe Wendtii-brown, or wendtiii tropica-Zez)
4. a sword (Maybe E. horemanii green-Zez)
5. dunno, but looks more marsh like, probably not fully aquatic. (forget eh name, but it dies slowly under water, minimal submersed growth-Zez)
6. no clue, wild guess, Green temple plant (yup some sort of Hygrophila, note the redish stems, someone else has this plant a few month ago on this board... maybe find that thread-Zez)
7. moneywort (agreed, Bacopa monnieri-Zez)
8. ??? (This on also looks like a hygro species, once they are planted and groing identification will be easier on the hygros-Zez)
9. looks like Dragon Flame or Dragon Tongue...non-aquatic. (Agreed-Zez)
10. looks like Mayaca sp. to me (cant tell let is grow and try to reidentify, a few species come to mind-Zez)
11. Alternathera renekii (spelled it wrong (Alternanthera reineckii "scarlet"-Zez)
12. Cabomba sp. (Agreed-Zez)
13. ??? (looks like more dragons tongue-Zez)
14. looks like a java fern (Agreed, maybe wide leaf-Zez)
15. ??? (maybe e tennelus or dwarf sag, see if it gets runners-Zez)
16. ??? kinda looks terrestrial though (or maybe a ludwigia in bad shape-Zez)
17. looks like foxtail sp. (something dead? - Zez)
18. java fern windelov (lacy java fern) (agreed "windelov" java fern-Zez)
19. maybe a sageterria species? (if you are lucky, it is E tennelus "Red"-Zez)
20. i know I already said it, but possible green temple (Hygrophila costada maybe-Zez)
21. chain sword? micro sword? (maybe, or maybe a Cryptocoryne parva - have to see the roots - Zez)
22. sorta looks like hygrophilia sp., like tropic 'sunset' that's lost soem of its pink (the edges look too serated for "sunset", to me it looks like emersed Prosperpinaca palustris "mermaid weed"-Zez)
23. java fern (ruffled edges? maybe Java Fern "tropica"-Zez)
24. maybe some kind of crypt? (or terrestrial? or salad? -Zez)
25. ambulia sp. (agreed, or maybe a hornwort-Zez)
26. also resembles Alternathera renekii (Agreed-Zez)
27. damaged moneywort (agreed, hard to tell scale, if real small may be Amiania "bonsai")
28. ludwigia repens I think (agreed-Zez)
29. ??? (looks like more of the dragons tongue-pretty sure its terrestrial)

Well, now that everything I wanted to keep is planted, here's some pics. Still open to naming some of them, will let you know which ones....

Plant 1:
Crypt Parva...

Plant 2:
2 Crypt Beckettii's, and a few other plants, with some HC. Question on name of the plant that looks similar to foxtail, in the middle. It's not like my foxtail in my 75G, this stuff is much narrower.

Plant 3:
Still need name for this purple plant, lol. Could it be a crypt of some kind? I planted it, and it's sending out some good roots. It was just a stem. The plant is very stiff as well.

Plant 4:
These other reddish plants have pretty much lost all their leaves, but some roots are developing. Will keep in a little longer to see what develops.

Plant 5:
These were red, lol. But now almost green, lol. See, I can't keep red, LOL.

Plant 6:
Java Fern I believe. Do I have it tied good?

Plant 7:
What is this Crypt? It's greenish in the pic, but in real life, it's more of a tan color. Kind of dusty looking. Really cool looking.

Plant 8:
Another purple guy. What is this thing. It's growing roots rather well.....
And no, it's not pearling, lol. Was from adding new water, had it over half empty when adding more plants.

Plant 9:
What are these? They are much narrower than my foxtails. Not even an inch across. And tthe red one is a little redder in the tank than in the pic. About the only plant that's holding red, other than the purple guys, lol.

Plant 10:
Another angle of #9.

Plant 11:
What is this? It's rapidly losing leaves as well. Not rooting much yet, nor sending out drop-roots. Starting to turn a little green, will see how well the red holds, if it does, lol.

Plant 12:
More of my Parva I got from Glenc.

Plant 13:
Tiny patched of HC. Need to be more dedicated and plant some more with tweezers, lol. When I get time, will plant more that I have floating.

Plant 14:
HC

Plant 15:
HC, Crypt Beckettii. What is the plants that look like grass blades? It's a single root system, with several blades that are very stiff.

Plant 16:
Another shot of the crypts and HC

Holy cow, don't know where to start with the ID's! Once those plants start to catch you are going to have a jungle in there! That just means you will need more tanks to put them all in.

Right now I just have things scattered. Waiting to get good roots, then will start re-arranging and scaping. Just want the plants to get used to the tank and get decent roots. So I have them all spread out.
