Ok, well the name "Diary of a 55 gallon planted tank" was already taken, but here are all the pictures I have been promising you guys for a very long time now. Some of the idea's in the design of this tank were not mine, I just compiled them for my own purposes. I am going the concentrate on the stuff that I did, rather than the stuff I bought in this thread. The tank equipment is in my signature.

You should check out LoneWolfBlue's "Diary threads" to see the tank painting ideas in several colors. So here we go, like any new aquarium setup, today we will start with... a new aquarium. As you can see the tank is outdoors. I did have the benifit of learing from LWB's mistakes after all.
img_706534_0_706a604b5640ffbd7c1c83df089437ee.jpg

I chose the black paint that LWB used on his 29 gallon tank.
img_706534_1_97426467c101db52c40923ffffc83f07.jpg

I also taped the entire tank where I didn't want the paint to go, including over the top of the tank.
img_706534_2_8b9e6bf73d4b00eaa38f44f8712e2f26.jpg

And when finished, the setup was well underway.
img_706534_3_edf0a2bc76e6aa24db818c623052935f.jpg

Next, I started thinking about the mechanical aspect of the aquarium. Specifically, my plants are going to need carbon dioxide. I opted to go with DIY setup as opposed to a pressurized system due to the relatively low cost. I began by assembling materials for the inline reactor and generator.
img_706534_4_5bd57668cf13b40012c0a729fa483feb.jpg

I began by drilling a hole in the PVC and the 3 bottle caps. I used the epoxy to adhere the airline connectors and used silicon glue to give it an extra seal.
img_706534_5_0d5d865b1eefec6ad423776d1f82101d.jpg

Assembling the airline was easy enough, I used a t-connector and 2 check valves. One has an air filter but thats just what I had handy.
img_706534_6_601d3734ae0060a1711a1f42a3895c7d.jpg

So I connected the airline to the generator caps and put them togehter. For the reactor I put the bioballs inside and glued the pieces together tight.
img_706534_7_77ee6d5f9b481186c43a88b804c6467c.jpg

And finally I had a working CO2 Generator and Reactor.

At this point I started thinking about what would go in the tank. I had a terracing effect in mind based on an article at plantgeek.com. I ended up with something completely different than the original idea, but I liked it and thats what counts.

I went down to walmart and found some pond pebbles which were identified as quartzite rocks. I cleaned them and boiled them for a few minutes. After the rock had dried I began to glue them together with silicon to create my decor.
img_706534_10_1647f56ac0f182321691827bafdcfbbe.jpg

Continuing to stack them up, the first large terrace is now complete.
img_706534_11_d300d2bbdad5076d97cd3cd19a2da563.jpg

I decided I needed more than just 1 and I wanted them to be at different heights to add depth to the tank (get it? depth. muahahaa).
img_706534_12_908aefa44114281f911939ea3fa2ebbc.jpg

Finally I wanted a cave, I knew I would probably look for a BN pleco so why not give him a home to hide from the evil light, right? Later I decided the cave alone looked boring so I constructed another small terrace to branch from it.
img_706534_13_3b3afb3655ce0e8bebe575aabc9464f1.jpg

It was all coming together at this point. I got the aquarium up on the stand, filled the tank, and added ammonia to get the cycle started.

Now the real fun begins. I placed the terraces and cave inside the tank. I bought some background plants to start but later realized the Red Wendtii was actually a mis-raised foreground plant. I'm just now getting it to stay low and turn red again.

The cave

Added the terrace later
img_706534_19_6fb690f5eb26e7f30572cec94bb10c2c.jpg

Added some driftwood and Giant Hairgrass to the center
img_706534_20_8d00a24c813201d031f82b6defd1ee42.jpg

And there she is, currently I have seen a Nitrite spike and I am dosing ammonia and fertilizers regularly. I do intend to get more plants, I think I have all the background I need but would like to get HC or glosso, and I need to choose some midground plants as well.

Looks great so far. Any ideas on what you are going to stock it with? Also are you planing to stagger the co2 mix changes or change them both at the same time?

wow i was originally thinking that exact same thing to do with the right hande side but ona smaller scale. u should attach some moss to the wall. will make it looks much more natural and will really add a punch to the tank.

Well it appears, right now I have a problem with algae (you can kinda see it on the back wall in some of the last pictures). I think it is thread algae, it is very soft and easily removed manually, but green not brown and I did see some long hair like runners floating in the tank. It is likely that I was a little to zealous dosing plantex. For now I'm going to stop dosing iron for a week or so and hope it dies off. I can't do a water change just yet due to the cycle not being complete.

Stocking, thats a good question. Well I have 3 adult swordtails, which unfortunately will most likely be two before the night is over. I have a tank full of fry, I may keep some of the fry to populate the tank after both my small tanks have been properly medicated.

I also want to get some cories and a BN Pleco. I would like a school of smaller fish, probably glowlight tetras. I had thought about a few kissing gouramis. Mostly it depends on what I can get. I have only one reliable fish store where I live.

The CO2 bottles will be refilled in a staggered manner.

Lookin good.......it's gonna be really nice when it grows in.

As you can tell by my tank.........I am a fan of the multi level design also.

Question......I'm a noob with DIY CO2.......what's the small plastic bottle for?

Keep us updated and good luck with that algae.

If this setup follows the standard specs, then the small bottle is a gas separator/bubble counter. It helps to ensure that the contents of the CO2 generators don't make their way into the tank.

Very cool, nice work. The real ride begins now, as your tank settles in you will get and battle different algea as you learn your tank. Post the problems as you encounter them and the good folks here will talk you through. It's alot of fun, frustration, and finally reward as you enjoy your beautiful planted tank. :)

That is correct, although I've had more of a problem with water backflow from the reactor. I think I'm going to put a third checkvalve in there between the small bottle and the reactor.

Yeah, I'm already battling algae. I think its more of a problem because I can't do a water change until the nitrites go down. Hopefully it will go away when I can properly maintain the tank as it should be.

tank looks great. I really like the background. Those plants will fill in nicely. Is that moneywort i see there. I lopve that stuff, it grows like crazy and will keep growing out of the water. I have it in a 5gal that is only like 1' high, and i have a peice of that that is about 2.5'.

Yes, plants are Moneywort, Wysteria, Radican Sword (broadleaf with green stems), Red Wendtii (broad leaf with red stems), and Giant Hairgrass thus far.

The thread algae is becoming much more prominent. My Ammonia is still dropping from 2ppm to 0ppm daily and my Nitrites are at the max for my test kit. I really hope they start going down soon so I can get the excees iron out of the tank. I'm not even dosing plantex anymore.

Been a while since I've updated you guys. Things are going well. The Cycle finished with a lot of thread algae, I put a handfull of MTS and 7 otos in the tank and most of it was gone in a week. I've added some new plants which I could used an identification. I also added some of my swordtail fry, but alas a rouge protozoan wiped all 3 of my adult females and while I did cure the male, he may be damaged beyond healing. Here are some new pictures of the plants. I also lost the moneywort, I'm not sure what went wrong but it just melted away until nothing was left. Its a very touchy plant so I don't feel too bad.

I am finally getting the Red Wendtii to grow as it should, as opposed to the tall green plant that it was when I first bought it (scroll up and you can definately see the difference, its the one near the caves).

The Wysteria just took off. Its covering the tank, and the off shoots near the base of the stem are making a nice carpet as well.

The radican sword is doing wonderfull, I love this plant when it really starts to grow, the leaves can get almost a foot long.

This is a new one, unknown. I used it to hide the filter intake.

Another one that needs an Id. I love the varigated red and green. It adds a lot of color to the tank.

I think this one is a Cognac plant but I am not certain.

Overall the tank is very successfull, with just a little bit of algae on the back wall.

that tank is filling in nicely. good job.

the second unknown, i would have to say is ludwigia repens.

Hmm. I'll accept #2 as Ludwigia repens. What about #1, perhaps a Ludwigia glandulosa that hasn't had limited nitrates?

The tank is really looking nice. The rock wall/planter is really a great idea.

I think mystery plants 1 and 3 are hygrophila species. Maybe corymbosa type (Compacta, Stricta etc)
