Very nice......you've got some nice color there.
I just skimmed through the thread....are you still running 2wpg?
What type of lighting?

The tank is beautifull, It looks like something you would see in the mountains deep in the woods yet its underwater. Very cool. Never done a planted tank before seeing that is very inspiring. good job looks great.:hat:

25th March 2008 - A quick picture of my 20G Dwarf Cichlid breeding tank (too many teen ager's atm)

----------------------------------

Overall i would say the last year has been a vast learning experience. I went from a total newbie, falling for all the usual planted tank traps, coming here and asking the standard questions again and again, to someone who actually know's what they are doing (to a certain extent).

There is real sense of achivement from finally getting on top of the algae problems and sorting your dosing out (THANK YOU MR BARR N CO).

Scape wise i've not even really starting "playing" yet. The last load of plants I bought in were an experiment in "what grows and what doesnt" in my "off the shelf" corner unit + pressurized Co2.

Finding the "sweet spots" for the light distrubution was also important, as there are definatly areas of tank that are dark spots due to the centralised location of the lights.

I am also amazed at how the plants respond to eradication of BGA. With regular cleaning and dosing they were doing ok, surviving on many counts, with the dwarf clover the only real victim.

But once i got the BGA nailed everything started growing like crazy. It was especially noticable in leaf size on the Red Tiger Lotus which now grows leaves as big as my head!!

So in summary,

THANK YOU AA!

for all the help you have given me to enjoy my new hobby more each day.

Best Regards,

Jac

You're definately getting the hang of it. Wonderful color in those plants. I look forward to when you start "painting" your scape with those colors.

Hi,

Other then a random outbreak of fuzz algae things have been going well. But i've decided to change things around a bit since i've got things working how they should and growing well.

Here are some pictures of the tank in its final state of this scape, ive let it grow a bit wild...

New plan is to open it all out. I've done the jungle now I want to be able to see the fish too. ;)

I'll post something later this week to show you where its at.

Jac

Wow, one of the nicer tanks I've seen. Well done!

Is that foreground plant in the bottom of the last pic stargrass?

It's dwarf soft rush. Its doing pretty will tbh and multiplies pretty fast. I'm going to use that as the "meadow" between the mounds of the new open layout.

Hi,

Still cloudy sneak peek at the new scape.

Hi,

Not entirely happy with the state of play just now. Been getting some strange leaf marks and die off after moving things around. I've also started to add some phosphate to my dosing since i was getting a bit of green spot on the leaves.

The phosphate in my water is meant to be very high (4ppm +) so id never bothered before, but possibly this had dipped due to winter and less fertilization of the farmland in lowland scotland.

I'm also thinking about changing my CO2 distribution by running a tube right down into my filter inlet as there is still some bba trying to get hold on the plants in the front corners. Furthest away from the glass disffuser.

Oh and had a little misshap with the java moss. I wanted to make sure i wasnt importing a bunch of cyno bacteria from the shrimp vase i took it from at my girlfriends house. I made up a solution of diliuted easy carbo, thinking it would do the same thing excel did to algae. Unfortunatly it nuked it all. It's taken a month for it to start turning green again.

Anyway. The pics.

------------------------------------

I've decided to give this scape a title - Forest on Fire

Layout wise ive got some tweaking to do, but i'm going to leave it until things get going again. Especailly the dwarf soft rush, which seems to have stalled and is loosing lower leaves for some reason, potentially my plec.

Best Regards,

Jac

i couldnt see any of the first pics but the ones i see look great very colourfull tank

i couldnt see any of the first pics but the ones i see look great very colourfull tank

thanks,

i've actually been holding off posting more pictures as things have been changing around in the tank a touch.

ive actually got rid of the Red Lotus, as it was mentioned earlier in this thread it becomes a PITA with leaves shooting off at a fast rate and blocking massive areas of the tank from decent light.

I loved the colour but it limited pretty much everything else.

The moss and carpet have filled in nicely.

I'll try and get a picture or ten tonight once ive finished working with the client ive got around.

Thanks,

John

Nice looking tank!! I thought it was a great thread I wish you would go through more specifically you battle w/ algae and your dosing schedule w/ and w/o CO2.

Are you still running 48w of T5? or 1wpg?

I'm just bought some of that red tiger lotus, should be here in a couple days, I guess we'll see how it does in my 55G. It does look like large leaves.

Hi again,

@ Speed Euphoria - The tiger lotus started off pretty small leaves but as i sorted my dosing out they just got bigger and bigger. The first set of photo's below show the tank just before i took them out.

I'm still running the 48w in 2 24w arcadia extra high output plant bulbs with special reflectors. If you do some funny math with the wpg rule it works out roughly 2 wpg. Again though it is funny math. The eco complete helps alot with growing stuff, and the CO2. I think i listed my dosing schedule elsewhere in this thread but it is pretty much a version of EI using 4 days of dosing in a week. So less but modified for the needs of the plants as i battled various algae over the last year and a half. Just now it is the best it has been. I've actually against all better judgement started to add a little phosphate on the second of the weeks macro days to counter green spot algae and it is working well.

I've also started to add easycarbo (european Excel rip off) just for kicks in addition to the pressurised, ph monitored CO2.

@ Newfound77951 - Tbh i'm getting very happy with the way this tank is going especially since ive only been going for a year and a bit. I'd say thou that the people here and the tanks in this forum have been so, so helpful in the time i've been here. Any credit would be to you guys before me.

So...

And that was the end of the Red Tiger Lotus. Passed onto the LFS and a friend. I may get one back in the distant future but the options for scapes and growing plants were very limited with so much of it in the tank.

-------------

As you can see since the Red Tiger Lotus has gone things are growing alot better. I'm thinking of ways to make it all more striking, basically involving reducing the amount of different species of plants present. But i'm going to let this mature a bit more first.

Best Regards,

John

Hi,

Last update for a while on this one as i've worked out where i want everything to settle finally. I did a bit of reading on the placement of red plants in mr amano's books and have moved them to try and use them as the "flowers" of my scape.

Everything else is going fine enough the dwarf soft rush has gone a touch insane and bulked out so well. As is the Java Moss.

Pictures...
