here is my new project. a planted one gallon bowl.
to start things off. my inspiration comes from the walstad method and planted hob filters. i will have aquatic plants in the bowl and pond/indoor plants hanging and around the bowl.
my equipments.
-one gallon bowl
- api first layer pure laterite
- flourish root tabs and liquid fert

my plants are going to be easy and undemanding plants.
so far now, i have added java fern and cryptocoryne lucens.
later i will be adding a few indoor/pond plants in the clay pots i have.

Are you planning on adding any fish, filtration, heating, or lighting?

That's a great idea with the plants around the bowl! Btw your a great drawer :)

before i came up with the idea of using the clay pots, i went out and made a hang on pot to plant pond/indoor plants. so while it was drying at the pottery shop, i thought about using the pots.
i went out and bought wires used for floral designs and made a hang on rack to hang the little clay pots on the bowl. in which, it turns out quite successful so far.
here are pics of my pottery and it's progress.
-- umm as i had expected, when the pot dries, i knew it would not fit the rim of the bowl. luckily a small part of it hangs onto the bowl. since im afraid it would not hold the weight of a little water, soil and plant, ill be adding suction cups on the pot.

oh yea, i completely forgot about those.
as for lighting i am using a desklamp and daylight fluorescent light bulb. i have it on a light timer (brinks from walmart.) but at the moment, im having problems understanding how to use it. :\
i dont plan on adding filters or heating.
i do plan on adding snails though, just nerite and or pond snails.

ill be back to ask some questions about heating, lighting, plants etc..

The snails could potentially squirm out of the tank since there's no lid

Snails have the potential to leave a tank but usually are more likely to do so when water parameters are too high.

I like the idea behind this, did you plan to glaze the clay and fire again? It should be able to hold the weight no problem.

ok. ill do my best to keep the water parimeters good.
about the pot. its been in the kin, fired and blazed already.

yes. I do not know where to start, looking up about them.
I want to know about ferns, and tropical house plants.

Have you read Diana Walstad's book? She goes into pretty good detail about how to set up such a tank.

Also, you really need to cover the laterite/root tabs with something. It will potentially keep your water nice a foggy like it is now.

I can suggest a few I have in my house, in ripariums and in my paludarium. There is spathiphyllum (peace lily), syngonium (arrowhead vine), spider plant, snake plant, pothos vine, maidenhair fern, tillandsia (air plants), bromeliad, selaginella, bella palm and succulents.

The peace lily, arrowhead vine and pothos do fantastic growing out of tank water. They enjoy wet feet. The spider plant gets bulbous roots (that could crack your pot) and the snake plant gets large but is impossible to kill. Succulents need direct sunlight for some of the day if kept indoors.

Oh and lucky bamboo (dracaena).

I have only watched a video about a guy talking about walstad method. I have not read it yet. do you think book stores have it? ill turn to getting one online if theres no books I can get locally. and I thought it would be ok to just have the laterite itself. ill go get gravel soon then. I didnt put in enougj laterite.

thanks mumma. I just went out and got me a bundle of three, lucky bamboo.

oh! good news. as I added a few stems of moneyworts today, found a snail who hitch hiked! lucky me. it'll save me some cents on getting them. woo'

I think it is nerite. its still really small. has the long spiral shell. it was actually hanging above the water surface. so I poked it and was surprised to see it was a snail.
