Are there any benefits to painting the back of a tank other than not seeing the cords?

Depending on the color, it helps the fish stand out more in the tank.
And you don't have to paint it, you can buy a background from Walmart pt other pet store, which is what I did. You can get on that's a plain color (like me) or with a picture of a coral reef, or a wonderful planted tank.

Which color would you recommend for the back of a planted tank? I was thinking black?

I actually just finished painting the back of my 2.5g. I used flat black krylon brand from walmart. I think it looks a lot better than using a background and you don't have to worry about bubbling.

I would go with black or blue. I agree that painting looks much better compared to a stick on background. No bubbles and the color is brighter.

Roll on latex paint. If you decide down the road you don't like it, just peel it off.
