What plant is this? It's in a display tank at my university and I'd love to get it for my own aquarium if only I knew what it was.

Great thanks! It's amazing how different one plant can look depending on the conditions it's grown in :) probably why google isn't very helpful with aquatic plant IDs!
 
Actually after further researching I think it looks more like rotala rotundifolia..
 
No its not rotala rotundifolia, that has much rounder leaves. Looks like ludwigia to me. Google ludwigia and you'll see several that look like this.

to me it does look like some form of rotala because of the leaf shapes and colors.

this is rotala macrandra the one on the right is mini macrandra and the left is green macrandra

This is the picture I found of rotala rotundifolia, I think it looks exactly like it.

When I search needle leaf ludwigia I get plants that look like this

I have this in my tank, its rotala. Its nice. Color on the leaves vary from red/brown to bright green.
 
Yeah I got into work today and had a look at the rotala and it's started growing new shoots that look like the picture you put up. I learned something new today ;) so ignore everything I said previously! Hah hah!
