Planted Aquarium and Brown Algae/Diatoms

I'm thinking I'd like to try my hand at live plants. I have an established tank (goldfish, so I know I'd have to be careful about which plants I buy because they're munchers!) but I have had brown algae/diatom problems in the past. Someone mentioned that plants can help reduce the amount of diatom blooms - has anyone had this experience?
