Java fern will attach to wood very easily, if the fern has those long brown stringy 'roots' that it sends out when growing. Just tie it to the wood (or if all you have is rock, pick a rock with some edges on it to tie to). In my tanks I do have to trim it back as it outgrows the crypts and anubias rather rapidly.

Given enough time java moss will attach to anything, including things you don't want it on. I'm helping my stepmom plan a tank for her office and I'm not going to recommend java moss to her... ends up being a cleanup issue after awhile. Same goes for any small-leaved or fine-leaved plant like anacharis or cabomba... doesn't take long for either of those to disintegrate and go straight to the filter.

Crypts are the slowest growing plant I have. But they're a good size for most any tank and they haven't seemed too picky about tank conditions.
