Can I just use regular gravel with micro swords, anacharis, java fern, anubias nana, water sprite, cabomba, and cryptocoryne?

Yes you can. But java fern and anubias don have to be buried.

With inert substrates you will need to use plant tabs for those you root. You can put java fern and anubia in the gravel BUT only bury the roots, you have to keep the Rhizome above the substrate. Or you can tie with onto DW or even rocks using cotton thread or fishing line.
