I have heard that you can layer the substrate in your tank what do you need to do for a planted substrate at the lfs I saw products called fluorite first layer and other substrate specific to live plants what is the best company and how do I layer plant substrate thank

Put a layer of something down and then another layer of something else on top :) its pretty simple :)

You dont really need to layer substrate though. The only time I would bother is if I were doing a dirted tank.

I like to use fluorite. If you go to Petsmart you can buy a 16 - 20 pound bag (I can't remember the exact weight) for around $12 so it's pretty cheap and it looks really cool.
Good luck hope I helped!

I too only layer if doing a dirted tank. There are many substrates from sand to commercial plant substrates like Eco Complete you can use that need no layering. I use Eco Complete in all my tanks.
