How can I plant in sand effectively and how deep should the sand be ?

I like all my substrates to be at 2-1/2 inches. You don't want them too deep and I've found that to be a pretty good depth. As for planting you just put the plants in that is nothing special that you have to do.

I use tweezers to be able to securely place all my plants in the substrate. It makes things sooo much easier than trying to do it by hand.

Okay well I ordered a multi tool off Amazon that has a plant fork so I will us that to make it easier and I think I will get another bag of sand as well I only have around an inch now !

It really depends what kind of plants you are going to put in.

Root feeders like Amazon Swords and alike, need to have a good 2-3 inches to establish their root system.

As for planting them, remove the foam they come wrapped up in, cut back any dying roots and dig them deep but make sure the substrate doesnt overtake the crown (the bit where all the stems come together).
