Java moss and or ferns and anubias are good for low tech tanks.
It really depends on what kind of set up you are doing. How many gallons, stock lighting etc. In our 1g I stuck a java lance fern tied to a rock. It's a little desk top tank that was for my desk at work but I started not trusting the cleaning crew. Anyways, it only uses a small light bulb. No heater and a tiny pump for an air stone.
