I am setting up a 55 gallon this summer and I was wondering if I should do sand or gravel, I will be putting in dwarf hairgrass, green cryptocoryne, and bacopia (i think that is how you spell it) will all these grow in sand? The reason I want sand is because I have corries that I will move to that tank.
Thanks!

I had a hard time with some of my plants staying down in the sand. Once the grew enough roots, the problem was gone

The bad thing about sand is the "choking" effect it gives on plants. Water can't pass through and around (carrying nutrients) plant roots. They have a tendancy to want to rot. I'm not saying to not use it, just do more research first. Maybe put sand just on top for aestetics.

Sorry, I am just excited!

Thanks, the sand on top of the gravel sounds like a great idea!

I would think the sand would seep through the gravel though..right?

This is gravel with play sand cap. The gravel makes it way to the top.

If your worried about compaction you can get MTS or fish to stir the sand. Another option is PFS. Larger grain size.
