Plants in stocking

A friend and I where trying to find a way to have plants in a tank that would have digging cichlids. The problem with them is they up root plants causing a mess with unlaying soil. So we thought maybe if we took a plant and put the roots in a stocking with dirt they would get the needed nutrients from the soil and the stocking would also anchor the plants better. Would this work? I added a picture below.

You could also bury a cup or pot with the dirt in it and top with gravel.

If I do that and the fish pull it out the soil will make a mess. The sticking contains the dirt, keeping it from making a mess.

Give it a try with plant and let us know if it works! Be sure to leave enough room for root growth...seems like it should work.

Yeah a small 2" plant and the sticking about the size of a softball. Plenty of room for the roots to grow
