Unhappy Problem with Blanket Weed

Hi, I have a planted tank with Amazon Swords, Sagittaria Subulata and Java Moss. Its been planted for about 10 days, when I planted it, I added JBL 7+13 balls into the sand substrate and JBL Ferropol to the water.

Since then the Amazon Swords have got some nasty looking brown spots on them, some of the Sagittaria Subulata leaves have died and the Java moss looks ok.

Also, I have noticed that blanket weed is appearing on the side of the tank, on the sand and on the top of the tank. I have set up one of the filters so it disrupts the surface of the water.

Any ideas how I can avoid getting the blanket weed?

I have no idea what you are referring to as blanket weed. Can you describe it a bit better and/or perhaps provide some pictures.

More information about the size of your aquarium, the amount of light you have over it, and the fertilizers that you are using (never heard of the brand you're using) would also be helpful while troubleshooting.

The weed is dark green and looks like hair - very thin and wispy. Its attached itself to the tank and onto plants too. I will post some picture later if this doesn't help.

The tank is 40 gallons, the light is an Arcadia Original Tropical 25 watt lamp.

As for fertilizer, I only added fertilizer when i planted the plants as per the LFS recommendations.

I suspect this "weed" is some sort of algae. Maybe this page GWAPA:will help you identify which type it is?

Ferropol - Iron and Potassium suppliment
JBL 7+13 - Iron suppliment

I'm guessing you have an iron overdose. Do you have an iron test kit? If that's the case, big water changes may help reset your tank to the local tap parameters, and back to the way it was before your outbreak.

Personally I do suppliment iron and potassium in my water, but it's easy to get it out of wack when done without careful study.
