proper way to cut a plant

is there a proper way to cut a plant? the one that i need to cut now is a stem plant (telanthera). but it general what are the rules about cutting plants.

For stem plants, just cut them. Sharp scissors and a clean cut, and you're all set.

Mosses either I cut it or pull it depending how much I want removed.
