I like this plant a lot, but all of the runners sent out from them seem to go above the ground! is this common for the plant? do I just need to show them deeper into the substrate?

I think this varies by plant. I've had some plants like pygmy chain swords and Ranunculus Papulentus which send out their runners above the substrate. Other plants like Crypts and Sag seem to prefer sending out their runner under the substrate. Once the daughter plant is big enough you can detach it from the mother and plant it where ever you prefer, which is actually easier when the runners are above the substrate.

I usually use my tweezers to tuck the runners under the substrate for chain sword type plants. They will eventually grab the substrate and root just fine if you do nothing. Tucking them in gets the roots going faster, and IMO is a more attactive presentation.
