Recent discovery! One cause of Diatoms in a planted tank!

I have struggled with diatoms for a long time with every planted tank that I have had. They have all been completely different setups with very little common denominators. I have found the cause of my diatoms. Here in central Louisiana we have very hard water so, I run my filters with peat granules. The Peat is has been the bane of my existence!

I took the peat out of my filter, cleaned my tank, and cleaned all of my plants of the diatom infestation. Lo and behold, voila, problem solved!

How interesting! Is there sand in the peat or something? Just thinking on the silica source.

Nope. There's no sand in my tank at all. That's one of the things that blew my mind.

Do you think the hard water is the cause? I understand a silica source is needed.
