Root tabs with laterite

I was just about to order some clay from www.plantguild.com for DIY root tabs and I noticed the comment that they could be made with clay or laterite. Has anyone tried this before? I realize that laterite isn't exactly cheap, but I can pick it up at my LFS. Ordering just this one item from plantguild means that I have to pay three times the cost in shipping which is always a little frustrating....

Laterite is just clay. Usually it's in a pellet form though rather than a powder, so I don't know how you would mix it and re-form pellets with it.
