strange white seeds on plants
I just set up my 38 gallon tank a few weeks back and put a good amount of plants in the tank (from azgardens.com). They are looking OK in general, with some plants not looking so hot. I have a small school of dwarf neon rainbowfish, a few kilifish, some cories and a few snails. Anyway, today out of nowhere, there appeared a bunch of small, whitish, kind of like seeds on various plants. I am adding [acronym:0b70cc95a8="Carbon dioxide"]CO2[/acronym:0b70cc95a8] as of last weekend with about 2.5 [acronym:0b70cc95a8="Watts Per Gallon"]WPG[/acronym:0b70cc95a8]. I will try and get a pic up. Does anyone what these are?? Also, I lost a few of the rainbows recently and one is not looking so good. They go through a deal when the scales near their tail appear to get discolored & fall off. Those suckers are not cheap!! Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

Can't access that pic but depending on what kind of snails you have they could be snail eggs. If you have nerite snails they lay hard, white round but relatively flat egg casings. They are about the size of a pinhead. The only thing to do is manually remove them.

When I put in the order at AZGardens, He recommened I get a few of these guys. Just went to his site and here is the description:
Algae Eating Olive Nerite Snail a.[acronym:3088eb030c="Kelvin or Potassium, depending on context"]k[/acronym:3088eb030c].a. Olive Nerites, Olive Snails Neritina reclivata -Probably One of the Best Algae Eating Snails you will ever Own! -THEY WILL NOT REPRODUCE IN FRESHWATER! -THEY WILL NOT EAT YOUR PLANTS These little fellas are actually about the size of a dime or a marble, and have neat little barnacles growing on the shells. Probably about the best algae eating snail for aquariums in the world, as they DO NOT reproduce in freshwater, but only in brackish or saltwater. YES, we have them here at the nursery in our FRESHWATER pools so you need not worry about any acclimation process unless you want them BACK in Saltwater. They may lay "pretzel- salt-looking" eggs, but they won't hatch unless the eggs are laid in, at least, brackish water. Great for keeping GLASS, & PLANT LEAVES clean! [acronym:3088eb030c="Normal Output Fluorescents"]NO[/acronym:3088eb030c], They won't eat your plants either. What else could you want in a snail? STOCK about 1 per gallon or more. Not easy to breed, as they are actually a brackish water snail (brackish water is where they are prolific). Excellent algae eating snail for freshwater aquariums. Will NOT harm plant life. Also, how do you post a pic? I seem to be having trouble...Thanks for all your help over these past weeks, Tankgirl. |

I have nerite snails and mine hatched in [acronym:aa246b0cbd="Freshwater"]FW[/acronym:aa246b0cbd], but at any rate it sounds like you have identified the culprit.

Yep, if you have nerite snails, and your water quality is good, they'll lay eggs EVERYWHERE.

The rule is, if you don't want snails, you'll get snails. If you do want them (to feed your puffers or loaches) you can't get them to hatch to save your life!
I'll be back in a minute with the cigars, JHawk ....
