Survey for "Updating the WPG rule (theory)"
Please post the following. Let's use what you can grow and your judgement for whether it is a low-very high light tank. With this in mind, past lighting set-ups are still usefull if you feel confident about the lighting level. If you happen to have >4" substrate or something weird please note it.
Tank volume Tank dimensions LxDxH Watts (please break down by lighting type - T12, T8, CF, spiral screw-in CF, etc) Lighting level (low-very high light) Notes Here is an Excel spreadsheet that does Ozz's current article calcs for your for you (lumens/watt for each bulb can be changed in the bulbs book as necessary). This will help in playing with formulas by using real-life tanks. Please leave this thread as data only and discuss here: http://www.aquariumadvice.com/viewtopic.php?t=72491 Thank you. -- 8gal 24x6.5x12 2x13w CF med-high 8gal 24x6.5x12 2x13w CF + 20w T12 + 23w spiral screw-in CF very high note: 23w spiral CF is on the side with a shade... ~5w usable light? 10gal 20x10x12 2x23w spiral screw-in CF medium 10gal 20x10x12 18w CF + 15w T8 + 32w spiral screw-in CF med-high note: 32w spiral CF is over the top in a gap, only effectively lights 1/3rd of the tank 10gal 20x10x12 23w spiral screw-in CF low 20gal 30x12x12 2x15w T12 low Last edited by An t-iasg; 02-28-2008 at 12:28 PM. 30 x 12 x 18 2 x 65w CF high - very high Notes: It is a bow front width goes from 11 to 14 in the center. I have not put a plant in yet that didn't grow. Haven't tried anything difficult but I have put in high light plants and they grow well without losing any leaves at the bottom. |

5 Gallon Hex
6.25 x 12 (length of a side x height) 10 Watt self ballasted screw-in CF Low - Med Notes: Found the area calculation for a hex is =((3*SQRT(3))/2)*(length of a side)^2, which makes it about 101.5 square inches for this 5 Gallon Hex. 2.5 Gallon Standard 12 x 6 x 8 2 x 13 Watt CF High - Very High

Before: growth very good to begin, plants die or suffer after a month. Lower stems would melt and leaves would fall off, java moss grew very, VERY slow. Anacharis only grew well when floating.
2, 10 gallon 15 watt NO on each Very low Now: Will update post with growth observation in the future 2, 10 gallon 1 40 watt GE daylight NO 1 40 watt GE plant/aquarium light NO even over top of both tanks Medium light |

70 gal bowfront corner (Dimensions are tough!)
48"w X 22"d x 25"h 2x 96W CF 36" in an Orbit fixture (pretty good reflector, but not GREAT) I would call it medium-high. At 25", this is a pretty deep tank. The light directly above the large branches of my driftwood casts poorly defined shadows. You can see the shadow area, but there is no sharply defined shadow boundary. This is a young tank, but I've got Anubias Barteri v. Coffeefolia in the shade, watersprite (Ceratopteris Thalictroides) along the back wall, Red Tiger Lotus (Nymphaea Zenkeri) up front and a few stalks of Anacharis. All are growing like weeds.

48x18x21 2 x 32w T8 ODNO 2x (96w T8 Equiv) 2 x 40w T12 1 x 32w T8 High light Haven't had a problem growing anything including Rotala Nanjenshan (needle leaved), Rotala Magenta grows well. Macranda is not growing all that great. Horrible reflector (will be building one and documenting it) |
