To Prune a Java Fern

You can be as aggressive as u like and they should bounce back fine
 
Just pull off the leaves that are severely damaged at the base of the plant and the fern will bounce back healthier. I go through mine every week and clean them up.
 
another option is to trim the rhizome that has a cple shoots on it & transplant that,be sure to only bury the roots & not the rhizome.
1 leave with roots & part of the rhiz will produce a whole new plant,they can be tied in place & roots will attach themselves to driftwood, decor etc
 
That tree sculpture they are attached to is a good one for now. That tank has a fine gravel substrate, so plants don't really stay down.
