Trimming a stem plant

Theres two ways you can do it pull it trim the bottom and replant it, or trimm a little bit from the top, just make sure its a clean cut
 
Personally I don't pull a stem plant up to trim it unless the bottom needs replanting. Some plants like Cabomba's for example often need to be pulled up, the good thick top growth trimmed off and replanted, then the bottoms thrown out.

Otherwise make a clean cut between nodes, leaving the bottom planted, then you can replant the trimmed tops to make a thicker group of plants are to start a new group.
