Trimming Val

Hey all, I have managed to get some lovely thick Vallisneria through a friend of a friend changing his tank set up. It has grown out quite long and is covering the top of my tank a bit too much. I'm hearing there's a right and a wrong way to shorten this stuff up as he found it tended to die back when he trimmed the ends of the stalks. Is it possible to trim Val or do I need to remove the entire stalk from the root to thin it out?

a lot of people like to cut straight accross the plant where you want it to be trimmed with sharp scissors. i personally like to cut them at an angle to give it more of a natural look. the problem with that is that you are making a larger wound on the plant and it might have a harder time healing. i never had any problems though
