use of carbon in planted setups

anyone know the effect of carbon on trace elements, or other areas in a planted setup?

Carbon has no to subtle effects. It really depends on what the limiting factor is in your tank, every tank will have one. If you get to the point where it is trace elements and micronutrients instead of light, other ferts, temp, carbon dioxide, etc. then you may not want to use at all or only for a short period of time (like overnight once a month).
