I'm unsure of the name of this plant as it was only labeled "Aquatic plant.“

My tank is currently in the middle of its cycle right now with some high nitrite readings and ammonia still present.

Hard to say.

Doesn't look like hair algae nor does it look like black stag horn.

I know some leaf plants put out baby plantlets underneath their leaves

but this does look a bit parasitic.

I'd remove it manually for closer inspection and get rid of it. But take some pictures of it out of tank hopefully we can identify

In my experience nothing. You can try planting the new one but I read that they don't usually materialise.

I have had luck with them once they get inch or so. I usually tear leaf and all

That looks like a tropica fern with a baby rooting off of it

These will continue to grow and eventually will fall off. It will either
A. Root itself adjacent to the parent or
B. Float away. In which case you can plant it and you have a new tropica fern.

Congrats, you are a grandparent! Haha

Yup, like the other responders have said, it's a new plant. Java ferns have a pretty unique way of putting out new plants. I had a bunch of them in my tank do this, some of them I planted and some of them I just got rid of. I missed a couple of them and they started putting out new leaves and were basically growing on the parent plant. Nesting ferns, anyone?

It just means that plant is healthy and the environment is good.

Looks like each leaf has one and they're growing pretty aggressively. I'll probably just keep the best looking ones and see how they do.
