What to do with swords...
Since I'm going to be redoing my 75G, what should I do with my swords? I was thinking of trimming the roots, cutting off most all leafs except the newest ones, and replanting. Is there anything that I can do to make them look better and not have such a huge ball on the bottom?

lol, i don't think you should trim the roots, but that is just me. I always rip off the old leaves so they fit in my 5gal tank, lol. Good luck

split the swords into 2 then shave off the extra leaves. this will make the base of the plant smaller and allow it to send out more new growth. i split my swords when they got to wide and replanted. grew great after i did it to.

I'll have to split them then. They are about 4 inches across at the base, lol. Do you just rip it apart or cut it down the center with a sharp knife? I might even be able to do mine in 4ths, LOL.

I don't know how I missed this. I just did it recently with my huge mother sword. Yes, slice very carefully to separate them and give the roots a nice trim as well. I got four new plants out of the one.

Once I start my 75G teardown, which will be in a couple days, will give it a go. Pulling driftwood, plants, and re-arranging. Then will have some pics of the process of course. Once I start, will open a new 75G thread with the revamping of the tank.

Thrust, parry, dodge, slash and stab! Anyway, I took my red melon sword and basically stripped it completely of all roots and leaves short of two really short ones. Right now it is putting out verty small leaves and hasn't gotten a massive root wad yet. I thik the roots plany a huge part in their size and the bulb. If you keep either/both short/small it should keep it manageable in any size tank. Will have to try the seperation thing and see how that works as mine is the size of a golfball. |
