I wouldn't feed your fish for a couple days to lessen the amount of waste they produce. And hope for some GW to help with your ammonia issues (only if you have a UV sterilizer or diatom filter).
i just took the sponge out of the hob, and runge it out into a clean pail, rinsing and ringing until the water i runge out was mostly clear, i left the filter cartridge untouched to not take all the bacterial...

also i pulled about half my plants, elodea mostly, wast white, will replace with something fast growing tonight to maybe start pulling out ammonia...
