I think this is an eexcellent question. What about the why's behind the answers. If you said only one or the other what is the justifaction for it?

I have two reasons.

First, my buddy has been running his 120 with only live rock for 8-9 years now. He's also doing this without any fuges or skimmers and has a beautiful tank.

Second, Bills....bills .....bills. Once i get caught up, I will start adding more stuff.

are you saying he has no sump? Or just that LR is all that is in the sump to filter his tank?

He has no sump. This isnt my buddy's tank but here is sombody doing something simillar. Sometimes simplicity just works...
