Candy Cane Coral

I bought a Candy cane coral recently and wanted to know if it was normal for the polyp to look like this. I dont know if they should be more out then this.

That looks about like one of my polyps which fell into the sand bed and I didn't notice it for a day or 2, and it later looked very similar to that, then after another week or two it was like a coral skeleton, died. The others which did not lay in the sand seem fine.

How is your water, and light?
