Banded Leporinus (Leporinus fasciatus)
Also known as the Black-Banded Leporinus, the Banded Leporinus is an interesting fish. It has an amazing jumping ability, making it unique to have. It has bands of alternating colors of yellow and black. Young Banded Lepornis' have five stripes, while adults have ten, making them an easy fish to distinguish between young and adult. Want to keep it as a pet? You'll need at least a 70 gallon aquarium, probably bigger, espically if you want to keep more than one. You shouldn't have too much trouble keeping one as they are very easy to care for. They're good community fish, but can be fin-nippers so watch out for that. They also can be aggressive towards their own species. Avoid getting small species with them, as they may eat smaller tank mates. They get pretty big, usually getting close to 1'. Banded Leporinus are omnivores, so you can feed them a wide variety of things, including brine shrimp, blood worms, and beef heart. Vegetable matter should also be fed in flake or sheet form. Just try different things and see what your fish like best, as all fish are different. Your tank setup should have roots, rocks and driftwood. However, they may eat tender plants. Being a jumper, a tight lid is a must. If you cannot get a tight lid, you should look for other species. Temperature should stay between 72-81 degrees fahrenheit, or 22-27 degrees celsius. If you're looking to breed Banded Leporinus, good luck, as their breeding habits have not been documented. Remember, not every site you research on will have the same results. People will disagree on max size, care level, experiance needed, etc. It's important to do research before buying a fish, or any animal for that matter. Check sites, although some could have bad or outdated information, for care sheets and other things.
