come get me tang police!
Common name: Dollar Sunfish
Scientific name: Lepomis Marginatus
Native range: Southeast US from north carolina, parts of kentucky, south to florida and west to texas.
Native habitat: Sloughs, slow flowing streams, vegetation.
Compatible tankmates: Other similarly sized fish, these fish are semi aggressive and similar in temperment to medium sized cichilds
Recommended tank size: 29+, larger the better as this fish can be territorial.
Lifespan: Around 5-6 years in captivity
Size: Approximately 5" to 6"
Diet: Insectivore, readily accepts prepared foods.
Description: Small, somewhat round shaped body. Light blue/green background with small blue flecks, almost a light gold appearance. Males generally have a more intense coloration.
Behavior: Can be a good community fish with compatible tankmates. Males however can be particularly aggressive and will stake out a territory. Well planted tanks with line of sight breaks seem to help greatly.
Reproduction: Seasonal spawner, Males will actively defend eggs and fry from potential predators.
General: Another shining example of a perfect addition to larger semi-aggressive tanks that makes a stunning specimen, yet is rarely available for sale in the hobby. These fish are absolutely beautiful, males in breeding colors can take on a deep red coloration that is hard to miss.
These fish are extremely hardy and are found in varying ranges of water conditions, so they adapt quite well to tank life. They also readily accept flakes and pellets so feeding them is not a concern once they get settled in.
They are interactive, will hand feed if trained, and learn to follow people who walk past the tank.
